The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), conducted by the OECD, evaluates every three years what 15-year-old students know and can do in science, reading, and mathematics. In 2022, 81 countries and economies participated. The eighth round of PISA was postponed from 2021 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From Latin America and the Caribbean, 14 countries participated: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. This brief describes what PISA is, the competencies assessed, and how the participation of countries in the region has evolved in different rounds.
