The Environmental and Social Policy Framework (ESPF), approved in September 2020, is the IDBs guiding document to ensure that projects financed in Latin America and the Caribbean promote sustainable and inclusive development. The ESPF focuses on managing environmental and social risks and impacts, elevating respect for human rights. It prioritizes gender equality, non-discrimination of vulnerable groups, resilience to climate change, and biodiversity protection (prohibiting offsets in critical habitats). Ten Environmental and Social Performance Standards (ESPS) detail the requirements for borrowers, covering everything from risk assessment and working conditions to resettlement and stakeholder engagement.
