Date
Dec 2006
This document was presented at the 1st Hemispheric Meeting of the Science and Technology and Innovation Network held at the Inter-American Development Bank on April 16th-17th, 2007. This account of the Bank's activities between 1990 and 2005 illustrates the contribution of the IDB Group to the efficient use of water resources in the region. The report surveys 432 water-related projects totaling US$13.2 billion. The IDB financed water-related projects in five subsectors (flood management, energy-hydropower, irrigation and drainage, water management, and water supply and sanitation), and five categories (infrastructure, modernization, planning, watershed management, and urban drainage). Public sector financing represented ninety six percent of the total water-related investments of the Bank. From a financing perspective, the most intensive water-related investment activity is taking place in Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia.
