In advanced economies, the vast majority of savings are intermediated through formal financial instruments. This intermediation can take one of three forms: direct financing, with individuals holding instruments issued directly by firms or the government; through institutional investors who then invest in those instruments; or through formal financial intermediaries such as banks.
