This brochure presents IDB Cares, the IDB Group initiative that accelerates investment in care systems, policies, and services in Latin America and the Caribbean. It shows why investing in care is both urgent and cost-effective. The analysis considers the regions rapid population aging, gaps in the coverage and quality of care services, and the distribution of unpaid care work, which falls mostly on women. Estimated returns exceed the investment in every case. The effects include job creation, higher female labor force participation, better learning outcomes and future earnings for children, and more efficient public health spending through care for older persons. The document describes the initiatives three pillars and its support instruments. It also summarizes a decade of IDB work in 21 countries and presents ongoing operations, along with six lessons for designing care systems across the life cycle.
