This report provides an in-depth exploration of the evolution of wireless networks, from the foundational technologies of 1G to the groundbreaking capabilities of 5G and the anticipated advancements of 6G. It examines the transformative applications of these networks across industries such as healthcare, education, and urban development, emphasizing their potential to drive economic growth, reduce social disparities, and foster environmental sustainability. The report also highlights the unique challenges and opportunities in deploying next-generation networks, with a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). It incorporates insights from the Inter-American Development Banks Broadband Development Index, outlining strategies to bridge digital divides and enhance broadband access in underserved regions. Finally, it addresses the critical policy, regulatory, and technological hurdles that must be overcome to fully realize the potential of 6G, including spectrum management, energy efficiency, and cybersecurity. By fostering collaboration among governments, industries, and global organizations, next-generation networks can create a more connected, equitable, and sustainable future.
