Aluminum, cement, pulp and paper, and steel can be found in all segments of the global economy, from short-term uses, such as packaging and personal hygiene, to durable goods, such as automobiles and appliances, to critical infrastructure, such as buildings, roads, and railways. They are also produced through energy-intensive processes that are significant contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions. Shifting these industries toward net-zero carbon pathways will be instrumental in meeting global greenhouse gas reduction target. This report highlights potential pathways to decarbonize these industries in Latin America and the Caribbean through a detailed examination of each industry through technical, sectoral, environmental, and policy perspectives. It aims to provide policy makers with a basic understanding of each industrys fundamentals, the challenges to decarbonization, the available options to overcome those challenges, and a broad roadmap to move toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
