Trafficking in persons is a crime and a serious violation of human rights that affects millions of children, women, and men around the world. The “Regional Action Guidelines for a Coordinated Response to Trafficking in Persons from the Security and Justice Sector,” developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Inter-American Development Bank, comprise five documents: the Introductory Guide; Guide 1 on the prevention of trafficking in persons; Guide 2 focused on investigation and prosecution; Guide 3 on the assistance and protection of survivors; and Guide 4 on international cooperation in the fight against trafficking in persons. This Introductory Guide provides answers to frequently asked questions related to trafficking in persons, such as what the crime entails, its purposes and modalities, and how it manifests in the global context and in Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition, it identifies affected populations and debunks common myths surrounding this crime. It also describes key approaches to addressing trafficking in persons in an integrated manner, which are further developed and applied throughout the subsequent guides.
