This study has been carried out with the purpose of assessing the overall investment needs of Latin America and the Caribbean by 2015, based on the assumption of meeting the Millennium Development Goals with regards to improving access to drinking water services and to better sanitation. It should be noted that the estimates calculated in this survey will at a later stage be compared with the estimates carried out by each country's authorities, discussing their differences and similarities. Therefore, these estimates should be understood as preliminary, and to the best of our knowledge, they will constitute the first overall and systematic assessment of the investment needs in water and sanitation required in order to meet the Millennium Goals.
