| dc.description.abstract | This study provides a concise analysis of the current challenges facing Indigenous and Maroon communities in Suriname and provides recommendations for possible Bank support. Despite the paucity of data and statistical information related to these groups, the findings suggest that the extreme geographical challenges and social exclusion experienced by the Indigenous and Maroon communities have affected negatively their general levels of social and economic development. Thus, the study recommends addressing some core regulatory gaps: land tenure, legal frameworks and regulations, and improving social indicators. This note includes: a description and analysis of the issues related to the current socio-economic and legal status of indigenous peoples and maroons; analysis of the Bank's existing portfolio and the portfolio of other international donors; analysis of consultation processes being developed with these groups; and policy recommendations regarding how to address the most important issues that affect these communities. |
