| dc.description.abstract | This study assesses the health sector in Suriname, with the goal of assisting policy makers to develop a better understanding of problems and to propose a range of solutions. This study presents the analytical framework used to assess the health sector, reviews the major findings, and presents key recommendations. The focus is on the complex inter-relationships between the major actors in the health sector: policy leaders, consumers, providers, and payers. This market-oriented framework was chosen because the health system in Suriname is comprised of relatively autonomous providers and institutions, both private and public. Emphasis is placed on the way hospitals, individual providers, and consumers respond to the incentives they face and the resulting implications for equity, efficiency, and cost escalation. |
