This Annual Report details the Bank's activities in environment and natural resources during 2003. In 2003, the most significant development on the environment within the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) was the adoption of the new Environment Strategy in June. It is based on the recognition that environmental quality and the natural resource base constitute the natural capital that sustains economic growth and competitiveness in the long run and that helps reduce poverty and improve social well-being. This Annual Report has a special section with a focus on water and includes selected indicators on water and sanitation in Latin America and the Caribbean.
