This Annual Report details the Bank's activities in environment and natural resources during 1998. During the past year the Bank has continued to implement the mandates of the Eight Replenishment of 1994 to enhance the environmental quality of Bank operations and support the improvement of environment and natural resources management in the region. Lending in environment and natural resources increased significantly in 1998 compared to the previous three years. Furthermore, major efforts were made to help countries recover from the effects of El NiƱo, whose impacts were felt region-wide, and from the devastation wrought by two hurricanes on the economies of several countries in Central America and the Caribbean.
