This study was undertaken in response to a request from the government of Brazil that the Inter-American Development Bank support the analysis of infrastructure integration in South America at the level of the region¿s highest authorities. The request was made in light of the convening of the Meeting of South American Presidents in Brasilia on 31 August and 1 September 2000. The study newly reaffirms the IDB¿s commitment to the development of regional infrastructure as a key to the competitiveness of the South American countries, and to the consolidation of integration and cooperation processes in the region.
