Estimates for the expansion of the electricity sector by 2030 suggest that Latin America and the Caribbean are on the right path towards decarbonization. However, there is a need to accelerate the pace to meet the goal of zero net emissions by 2050. This report invites us to reflect on the direction that the sector is following, and presents the investment needs to decarbonize the electrical matrix and emissions of CO2 equivalent (MtCO2e) if there is no substantial change in the trends declared in the expansion plans. The report also explores key factors for meeting emission reduction goals, such as increasing energy efficiency and electromobility.
