Financing the New Silk Road: Asian Investment in Latin America's Energy and Mineral Sectors

One of the most important trends in trade and investment of the past two decades has been the increased participation of Asian firms in world markets. This emergence of Asian actors as large investors in a variety of industries - from boosting advanced technology companies to leasing large tracts of land for agriculture - has certainly also been witnessed in Latin America. The aim of this note is to provide a detailed analysis of the level of investment by Chinese and Indian firms in the energy and mining sectors in Latin America and the Caribbean, and to describe the patterns and trends exhibited by this capital influx into the region from Asia.
