AB  - Hurricane Melissa caused unprecedented devastation in Jamaica, with total estimated costs exceeding JMD 1,451,577 millionover three times the expense of Hurricane Gilbert, the country's previous costliest storm. The private sector bore the brunt of the disaster, accounting for the majority of damages and losses, especially in tourism, housing, and environmental subsectors. Tourism was particularly hard-hit, suffering the highest shares of damages, losses, and additional costs among productive sectors. Social and infrastructure sectors were also significantly affected, with housing incurring most additional costs and the power and transport sectors together comprising the bulk of infrastructure losses.

This study summarizes the results of the hurricanes damage and loss assessment.
